If you were to ask me what the most beautiful place in The Hague is, my answer would be the Lange Voorhout. Dare I say it: perhaps in the country? The historic street is lined with Linden trees that, together with the white and purple violas, set a different ambient decor for every season. Whenever I walk along the avenue in the early morning, enjoying the quiet of a city that has yet to wake up, I greet the statue of Couperus. And when I squint my eyes, I can almost see her, Eline Vere, stepping out of her horse and carriage, her shoes clicking on the cobblestones.
